Posters for promoting the Fediverse

Here are a couple of poster templates that you could use to promote the Fediverse, for example on local community noticeboards, activist meetings, tech events, political events etc. Click on a poster to go to the image file, which you can then save to your computer or device. Always seek permission from a venue before putting up a poster there.

Horizontal poster promoting the Fediverse with text: "The Fediverse is a social network owned and run by grassroots community groups and ordinary people all around the planet."

Below this is a series of three forbidden signs about what the Fediverse doesn't have.

"No corporations, no billionaires. The Fediverse is thousands of independent non-profit servers that talk to each other to form a global network."

"No adverts, no algorithm. Your timeline is entirely in your control. Nothing is messed around with or shoved in your face."

"No AI, no blockchain. The Fediverse is built on tried and tested sustainable methods, with a network structure similar to email."

Below this is the rainbow coloured pentagonal Fediverse logo followed by the caption "Find out more:" and a blank space where people can fill in their preferred source of info about the Fediverse.

What’s the “Find out more” section for? Why is it blank?

The “Find out more” section is deliberately left blank so you can write in whatever additional info you think is appropriate, for example a website with useful info, or a good Fediverse server for your area or country, or a local group providing info about joining the Fediverse etc.

I don’t know what to put in the “Find out more” section!

If you’re totally stumped for what to put in the “Find out more” section, I would recommend putting the Fedi.Garden ⧉ website address and a short explanation of what it’s about. Fedi.Garden is specifically designed to help people join the Fediverse, and provides lots of info about the basics of joining as well as suggestions for good reliable servers to join.

How do I add info to the poster?

The easiest way is to print the poster and write into the “Find out more” section with a dark marker pen. Handwriting is great because that’s the point of these posters, to promote a network made of human beings rather than corporations or AI.

Alternatively, if you’re running a local group and have your own pre-printed stickers or cards giving details, they could be stuck into this section.

How do I resize these posters?

The poster templates have been designed with A4 paper in mind, but you can use your printer settings or image software to print them any size.

I have feedback about these posters / I want to translate these posters into my own language

Great, get in touch with me via the FediTips account on Mastodon ⧉.

Where would I find community noticeboards?

You often find community noticeboards in local shops, community centres, libraries, universities etc. They let people know about local groups, events, useful info etc.

Always ask permission from the owner before putting anything on a noticeboard! Also ask them about requirements for notices, some of them may have a maximum size limit which would affect how you print out the poster. They may also have restrictions about what kind of notices can be placed on the board.

Is it okay if I spam this poster without permission?

NO! Don’t put posters up where people don’t want them, it gives the Fediverse a bad name.

I have made my own poster, what do you think?

Brilliant! The templates above are just suggestions, let me know if you want your own Fedi poster shared via this site.

Surely the Fediverse has an algorithm? All computer-related things have algorithms!

Most non-techy people use the word “algorithm” to mean a hidden opaque system that removes stuff from their timeline or adds stuff to their timeline or moves stuff about on their timeline without their awareness or permission. The Fediverse doesn’t do this, so it’s appropriate to say the Fediverse doesn’t have an algorithm.

There is often a gulf between dictionary definitions and real world usage. For example, “computer” technically includes any device that can run software such as smartphones, smartspeakers, smartbulbs etc, but most people use “computer” to just mean a desktop PC or laptop PC.
